Scrap Fabric Project-Butterfly Wings

After every project there are always some scraps left over. I just can’t throw them away knowing someday there will be a project just perfect for those bits and pieces. 

Here’s one great sewing project for scrap busting or fat quarters, Butterfly wings!

The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. I did use 3 layers of pretty heavy interfacing and 2 layers of batting on the child size so they would stand up and not be floppy. In the doll version I just used 2 layers of heavy interfacing. Deciding the design and layout of the appliques was a lot of fun. Remembering to press the fusible to the wrong side of the fabric and mirror imaging the pieces was the only hiccup I had. That was me just being a goofball!

When I make these wings again  I’m going to try a foam, soft and stable or Pelion flex foam,  instead of batting and extra interfacing. This may give the stability but will be easier to sew through when top stitching and attaching the appliqués. 

There wasn’t an elastic length given for the doll size but I used 18 ½” length of ⅜” wide elastic for an 18” American Girl style doll. 

I used fabric scraps from my stash collected over the years and yardage of Art Gallery Fabrics Striped Flow Rainbow for the backside.

I can’t wait to make more! Maybe a set to attach to my sweet Lucy dog’s harness for walks! I'm sure she’ll love that!
