Turn Any Canvas Into Quilt Art in Minutes

Turn Any Canvas Into Quilt Art in Minutes

Have a quilt block you love but don't know what to do with it? Here's a simple way to display quilt blocks, mini quilts, and fabric art without committing to a permanent frame.

This project uses a stretched artist canvas and a removable fabric cover, allowing you to swap out designs whenever you want.

Why I Like This Method

  • Lightweight and easy to hang
  • Change designs seasonally
  • Great for mini quilts and orphan blocks
  • No special framing required
  • Uses supplies you may already have
  • Gives quilt blocks an art-gallery look

Supplies

  • Stretched artist canvas
  • Fabric for the cover
  • Coordinating thread
  • Rotary cutter and ruler
  • Sewing machine
  • Measuring tape

Step 1: Measure Your Canvas

Measure the width and height of your canvas.

The cover can be customized to fit any canvas size, from tiny mini canvases to larger wall displays.

Step 2: Create a Quilt Block or Fabric Art Panel the Dimensions of Your Canvas

You can use:

  • Traditional quilt blocks
  • Modern improv piecing
  • Appliqué
  • Fabric collage
  • Mini art quilts
  • Embroidered designs

Make the front panel the same size as the face of your canvas. Quilt with batting and backing fabric.

Step 3: Add Elastic Corner Holders

Add approximately a 4-inch piece of 1/4-inch elastic diagonally across each corner on the back of the artwork. The elastic stretches over the canvas corners, creating a secure fit while allowing the cover to be easily removed and swapped out for a new design. Adjust the elastic length as needed for larger or smaller canvases.

Step 4: Bind the Edges

Finish the artwork by adding binding around all four sides, just as you would for a small quilt. The binding gives the piece a clean, polished look and helps protect the edges from wear. Or if raw edges are the right vibe, skip the binding!

Step 5: Slip It Onto the Canvas

Place the cover over the canvas and slip the elastic over the corners. Now your art is ready to hang and enjoy!

The result looks like framed art, but you can swap it out in seconds.

Endless Possibilities

One of my favorite things about this project is how easy it is to change the look of a room.

Imagine:

  • Seasonal quilt blocks
  • Holiday designs
  • Children's artwork printed on fabric
  • Modern geometric designs
  • Quilt guild challenge blocks
  • Fabric collections displayed as art

Instead of storing your favorite blocks in a drawer, put them on display.

What's Next?

I'm experimenting with different sizes, fabrics, and ways to make these interchangeable covers even easier to use. Follow along to see future designs and tutorials.
