10 Essential Tips for Sewing with Quilting Fabrics
Share
If you’re like me here at Sew Much, you know the thrill of finding that perfect quilting fabric for your next project! But while quilting cotton is the go-to for quilts, it’s also versatile for clothing, home decor, and even accessories. In this post, I’ll cover essential tips for sewing with quilting fabrics, so your projects turn out beautifully every time.
1. Start with Quality Fabric
Quality quilting fabric is durable and easy to work with. At Sew Much, I carry a wide variety of quilting fabrics that will hold up well in your projects, whether you're making quilts, clothes, or home decor items. Purchasing fabric brands that are exclusive to quilt shops and approved retailers will ensure you are getting quality fabric.
2. Pre-Wash Your Fabric...Sometimes
Quilting cotton can shrink a bit when washed. By pre-washing your fabric you can avoid shrinkage surprises after you've completed your project. I only pre-wash fabric that will be made into a garment where shrinking could be a problem. Washing also removes any chemicals or finishes from manufacturing, giving you a fresh, clean start, but I find fabric from quality brands rarely needs pre-washing.
3. Choose the Right Needles and Thread
Quilting cotton is a medium-weight fabric, so a universal needle (size 80/12 or 90/14) works best. For thread, choose a high-quality cotton or polyester thread in a neutral color that blends with your fabric.
4. Use a Rotary Cutter for Precision Cutting
A rotary cutter and mat make it easy to cut straight, clean lines, which is especially helpful when working with quilting patterns. Using a rotary cutter can save time and make your cuts more accurate than scissors. For cutting pattern pieces for garments and curves, quality fabric scissors will do nicely.
5. Match Your Patterns Carefully
Many quilting fabrics have repeating patterns, and aligning them can make your project look extra polished. When cutting, take a few extra minutes to ensure patterns line up where they meet. This tip is especially important if you’re creating panels or piecing together a quilt backing.
6. Press, Don’t Iron
Pressing your seams with an up-and-down motion helps set stitches without stretching or distorting the fabric. Avoid ironing in a back-and-forth motion, which can warp the shape of quilting cotton.
7. Consider Using Interfacing for Added Structure
Quilting cotton can be a bit lighter than apparel fabric, so if you’re making something that needs structure (like a tote bag or dress bodice), consider adding interfacing. It will give your fabric a bit more body and durability.
8. Experiment with Fat Quarters and Precuts
Fat quarters and other precuts are perfect for quick projects! They're great for quilting, but they also work well in smaller sewing projects, like zipper pouches, fabric coasters, or patchwork pillows. Check out the collection of fat quarter bundles at Sew Much!
9. Stay Stitch Curves to Prevent Stretching
Quilting cotton can stretch on curved edges, like necklines or armholes. Adding a line of stay-stitching along the curve before assembly will help it keep its shape.
10. Finish Seams for a Professional Look
While quilting fabrics don’t unravel as much as other fabrics, finishing your seams with a zig-zag or overlock stitch adds a professional touch and makes your project more durable. Try using French seams for a flawlessly clean finish on your seams.
